Feeding the animals...

We had a wonderful opportunity last week to take a little field trip to the Elephant Orphanage and the Giraffe Center. There the kids petted orphaned elephants, saw a baby rhino and fed the Giraffes.

What a cool experience to feed a giraffe! We were in a building about 12 feet off the ground and the each giraffe (there were about 5 that came up close and another 5 in the distance) just came up and ate out of our hands. They were some of the most gentle creatures that I have ever seen.

For the curious types, a giraffe's tongue is about 14 inches long, purple, rough like sandpaper and very slimy - but very antiseptic. They eat eucalyptus all day making their mouths "cleaner" than a dogs. They say dogs mouths are very clean, don't they, or did I just dream that one up?
